Christian group ‘Christafari’ tops Billboard reggae charts
Christian reggae band Christafari tops the Billboard reggae album charts with ‘Anthems’ in its debut week.
The Christian reggae rock band was formed 25 years ago. The group is led by a former Rastafarian, Mark ‘Tansoback’ Mohr, who now claims Jesus and is an ordained religious minister.
It further indicates the difficulty for Jamaicans to chart or top major US-based charts.
Currently, US-based reggae bands dominate the Billboard chart, with only three Jamaicans. The Jamaicans currently on the chart are Jah Cure with The Cure at number 7; Iba Mar with Diamond Sox at number 9 and Carlene Davis with Dripping Blood at number 10.
Billboard charts are determined by sales within the USA which gives native American artistes an advantage over those from Jamaica.
Most of these charting artistes would be largely unknown in Jamaica including Stick Figure with Set In Stone charting at number 2; Joss Stone with Water For My Soul charting at number 3, Rebelution with Count Me In at number 5 and Iration with Hotting Up at number 8.
